[TUT] iPhone 3GS Old Bootrom Update iOS5

First of all, your iphone 3gs MUST BE JAILBROKEN BEFORE
Secondly, if you are relying on an unlock with ultrasn0w, you must have one of the supported basebands.
Thirdly, make sure you back-up all your data, before proceeding. [RECOMMENDED]
OK. Let's start
We will be using a tool called sn0wbreeze-v2.8b8. Sn0wbreeze helps you preserve your old baseband so you can unlock it using ultrasn0w later.
We need to create the custom firmware file using sn0wbreeze-v2.8b8. After that we will plug our iphone 3gs (old bootrom) in the computer.
And WHILE WE ARE ON AN OLDER FIRMWARE (for ex. 4.3.3), WE CUSTOM UPDATE TO OUR NEW CFW. THAT WE CREATED.
Steps:
1. Download sn0wbreeze-v2.8b8, if you don't have it.
Link: www.ih8sn0w.com
2. Download the latest version of iTunes if you don't have it.
Link: www.apple.com
(3. Plug your device into your computer and back-up it.)
4. Open sn0wbreeze-v2.8b8 (Run as Administrator)
5. Skip the credits and click on the blue arrow.
6. Select your firmware (this is the original firmware from Apple)
Tip: Use the link given in the application (sn0wbreeze-v2.8b8) to download your firmware.
Another tip: the file must be named: "iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw"
7. Click on Old-bootrom (this tutorial is only for old-bootrom)
8. Click on the blue arrow.
9. Expert mode and then click the blue arrow to continue.
10. Click on General and the blue arrow to continue.
11. NOW IT IS IMPORTANT! If you are using an unofficial sim card and you are unlocking with ultrasn0w, then DO check Activate the iPhone [Hacktivate], but if you are a user of AT&T and such services (official), then you must NOT check Activa the iPhone [Hacktivate].
Tip: You'd better check Activate the iPhone, just because I think most of the ppl have unofficial sim cards and they want to use their phone with any other sim card.
12. Click the blue arrow to continue and UN-check boot logo and recovery logos
13. Click the blue arrow to continue. Now on the custom packages do not do anything. Just skip this when you click on the blue arrow.
14. Now you are returned to the main menu where General , Custom boot logos, Custom packages , Build IPSW are.
15. Simply click on the BUILD IPSW and then on the blue arrow.
16. Stick to the timer
17. After it completes its job, you will see sn0wbreeze_iPhone 3GS-5.0.ipsw on your desktop.
18. Put your device into DFU mode, then run iReb, and finally SHIFT + restore to sn0wbreeze_iPhone 3GS-5.0.ipsw using iTunes
Tip: if you dont know what DFU mode is, search and view some videos in youtube. and if you dont know what iReb is , go to youtube again.
Some info: iReb is the integrated program in sn0wbreeze that helps you put your device in PWNED DFU MODE. That helps itunes recognize your device and custom restore it.
19. After custom restoring, go to cydia, enjoy ultrasn0w, and I think you know what to do.
20. I tested that, and it worked on my 3gs old-boot. Everything works great. I will show you some pictures. I hope you enjoyed and I think it is not so hard. There are many steps but if you do know what you are doing, everything will be fine. If you have any question, but them below, and I will try to answer as fast as I can. Thanks for reading, now see the screenshots
Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=71FNQY6Z
The only thing that is set is: Activate the Phone [Hacktivate]
Spotted Problems!!!!!!
-----------------------------
Problem #1
You may have noticed that after the jailbreak one or more of your icons are white.
FIX: Reboot your device several times. If it still doesnt work, reboot it again and connect it to iTunes with USB.
Problem #2
If you are stuck on "Booting"; "Apple Logo"; "iPhone can't boot.", then it's because something has gone wrong.
For example, the last time I saw this problem was after an Cydia update. My phone crashed and I had boot loop.
FIX: Jailbreak your iPhone one more time

You only need a custom firmware which preserves your baseband when upgrading. If you don't need an unlock for your phone, (ie. if you are on an official carrier like AT&T or O2 etc.), than there is no need to preserve your baseband unless you want to preserve it to try and sell it as an unlocked phone in the future. The baseband will be updated to the current baseband when you use an official apple ispw and jailbreak unless you use a custom firmware ispw.Sorry to sound stupid on this but i tried researching and didnt get any results but, is the baseband 05.15.04 included in this jailbreak for the 3GS? Im on iOS 4.2.1 and with that baseband. Can i jailbreak using this as well?
Basically.....if you don't need an unlock then you can use the new Redsn0w to jailbreak your phone on iOS 5.x.

Because from what I have seen
All iOS 5 jailbreaks are all tethered

The 5.0 JB is tethered but it is untethered if you have the old bootrom 3GS.Is this a untethered or tethered jailbreak
Because from what I have seen
All iOS 5 jailbreaks are all tethered
Correct, if your device currently works and you don't have Ultrasn0w installed then it will also work with your carrier after jailbreaking.Oh okay. I think i get it now. So, technically speaking the baseband is not really an issue in terms of jailbreaking my iDevice. Well, my main concern here only is if i do update to iOS 5 and jailbreak it, i just wanna make sure my carrier will still work.

What carrier do you have? Did you jailbreak your current device yourself or did you buy it jailbroken already?I think i have ultrasnow installed lol. Hmm and im not sure if im on an old bootroom
If you have ultrasn0w installed currently then you most likely need an unlock and you SHOULD preserve your current baseband.

I followed your instructions and got a infinte recovery boot loop. I have the 5.13.04 baseband and trying to upgrade from iOS 4.1 which I jailbroke w/ sn0wbreeze. Any ideas??
Thanks
So, I found out I have the NEW bootrom. I could have sworn I had the old one...but then I remember Apple replaced it and I never checked again. Anyway, sn0wbreeze has a built in detector for bootroms; it will ask you which bootrom you have after you select the iOS 5 firmware. Hope this helps.

I dont know exactly. I think there were some issues with the JailbreakMe users. Search and ask for more help and pieces of advice. I cant reall help you because i have never used JailbreakMe. Dont be risky.Hi EAcheater...thanks for sharing....
If I'm jailbreak my 3gs by jailbreakme and my firm ware is 4.0.1 only still able do the same as above?
thanks...
I dont know about you but personally i dont rely very much on blablara1ns, because i have seen many blablara1n fake videos in youtube. But that doesnt mean limera1n is not true. In fact, i dont know xDI jailbroke it myself. I just opened my jailbreak folder here and i used redsnow and limerain for jailbreaking. So does that mean im safe?
He's right. (Thumbs up)What carrier do you have? Did you jailbreak your current device yourself or did you buy it jailbroken already?
If you have ultrasn0w installed currently then you most likely need an unlock and you SHOULD preserve your current baseband.

I will try to when i have free time. Make sure you also tried running the program in compatibility mode in win xp service pack 2 or 3, and running it as administrator. These options fix some issues.Would you be kind enough to uplaod the custom IPSW you have created.
my sn0wbreeze gets stuck everytime at creating IPSW.
thx in advance

It's a pretty straight forward process. Preserve your baseband and jailbreak.Hmm, now im confused lol. I really wanna go try iOS 5 on my 3GS but im stumped on the baseband. Kinda getting me worried. Trying to watch some vids over at youtube on how to jailbreak with redsnow as we speak. Hope i find my answer here and finally upgrade to iOS 5.
Follow these steps to upgrade while preserving your baseband:
1. Download iReb: http://hotfile.com/d...REB-r4.zip.html
2. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
3. Run iReb, and select iPhone 3G[S] as your device.
4. Follow the instructions to put the 3GS into DFU mode. iReb will then put it into Pwned DFU mode.
5. Open iTunes, and Shift-Click restore. Point iTunes to this custom IPSW (Removed baseband update): http://www.multiupload.com/Z6W5WSOZYW
6. iTunes will restore your device to iOS 5, and preserve the baseband.
Then you can jailbreak
1. Download the latest version of Redsn0w: http://blog.iphone-d...rg/redsn0w-iOS5
2. Use iDetector to find out what bootrom version you have: http://downloads.ih8...ctor-v1.0.1.zip
3. Run Redsn0w, and follow the instructions to put your device into DFU mode.
4. Select your bootrom version.
5. Select "Install Cydia", followed by whatever additional options you want. Don't select the option to deactivate.
6. Redsn0w will jailbreak your device for you.
Note: If you're old bootrom then it'll be untethered, new bootrom is tethered.
Edit: Install ultrasn0w after the jailbreak and you should be unlocked. As long as you have a baseband version at or below 05.13.04.

Dude, are you sure that there is a baseband 05.15.04 and that it is 100% unlockable??? I think ultrasn0w"s compatibility list is: 04.26.08. 05.12.01, 05.13.04, 1.59.00, 06.15.00. Im not so sure about that, please give me some more information. It's a pretty straight forward process. Preserve your baseband and jailbreak.

6. iTunes will restore your device to iOS 5, and preserve the baseband.
Then you can jailbreak

2. Use iDetector to find out what bootrom version you have: http://downloads.ih8...ctor-v1.0.1.zip

6. Redsn0w will jailbreak your device for you.
Note: If you're old bootrom then it'll be untethered, new bootrom is tethered.
Once you're on iOS 5 with baseband 05.15.04 you can install Ultrasn0w through Cydia, completing the unlocking process.

Whoops you're right, that should have reference baseband 05.13.04 or below. I corrected the original post.Dude, are you sure that there is a baseband 05.15.04 and that it is 100% unlockable??? I think ultrasn0w"s compatibility list is: 04.26.08. 05.12.01, 05.13.04, 1.59.00, 06.15.00. Im not so sure about that, please give me some more information.
3GS users with baseband 05.13.04 or below will have no trouble with that method. Others with baseband 05.14.02 or above will have to update tot he iPad baseband (06.15.00) or await a future unlock.
Not sure if/how milennium is unlocked on modem version 05.15.04, I'll have to PM him about that.
