Nowadays, excessive or careless cydia installations will cause my JB IP4 to behave erratically. Let's say if I am now on iOS 5.0.1 but it's no longer being signed by Apple. What is the correct way to restore the same firmware so I can JB it again?

Shift-restore in Itunes? Or just restore?

There are two ways:

1. Run TinyUmbrella, start the TSS Server, then restore to a 5.0.1 IPSW using iTunes.
or
2. Create a 5.0.1 CFW (Using Redsn0w, iFaith, or TinyCFW), and select the option to stitch your SHSH blobs to it. You then enter pwned DFU mode, and restore to the CFW using iTunes.

Actually what does stitching the shsh to the firmware accomplish? If I don't do it it can't be restored?

Currently you don't need these methods to restore to iOS 5.0.1, because it's still being signed by Apple.

When Apple stops signing iOS 5.0.1 you will have to use one of the two methods I mentioned to restore to that firmware. If you don't, then iTunes will output error 3194 and the restore will fail, leaving you in recovery mode.

Both methods are simply ways of tricking iTunes into using your saved SHSH Blobs to sign the firmware (It needs to be signed to work). Stitching does that by attaching the blobs directly to the firmware. TinyUmbrella does it by posing as Apple's servers, to make iTunes think that the firmware is still being signed.

I tried the TU method last time when apple wasn't signing 4.3.3 anymore with no success. It always errors out with 3194 though I have the shsh in cydia. Maybe the stitching method which I never knew off until now would be a more reliable option. That is if I need to JB again in the future.

Thanks for your advice :)
