I've had this category recently take up most of my memory on my iPhone:

I don't know what this is, this memory just suddenly took up most of the space one day when I synced my iPhone to iTunes. It used to be my apps that took up most of the space. It's hard to deal with this, since I can't download much apps or add anymore music to my iPhone. My iPhone runs a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.

Is there any way I can solve this problem without backing up and restoring?

Thanks.

EDIT: I went on YouTube for answers, and deleted most of the apps I had in Installous just like one of the videos instructed, but I still have 3GB of "Other" left. Is there any other ways I can reduce this memory?

Any data from cydia apps will cause this "Other" to increase or decrease. For example if you SSH videos or music into other programs other then the main native apps it will cause the "Other" to increase. I've got the VLC player and I SSH videos into its directory to watch them and this increases the "Other".

Another thing could be if you have ProTube/YourTube and download videos/audio this would cause it to increase as well.

Will the memory decrease if I remove some/most of my installed Cydia packages?

Matters what the packages are. Apps/Tweaks don't usually take up much space while Themes will take up 50-300mbs which would make a difference.

So the answer to your question is that yes removing installed cydia packages will increase the amount of space you have on your device.

Reason I'm using "space" and not "memory" is that people think of "memory" as RAM while others think of it as hard drive space.

That could also be caused by iTunes losing track of your media. Sometimes it will sync your music twice, the first copy shows in the music app and the second copy is lost in "other".

You can fix that by deleting everything in the \private\var\mobile\Media\iTunes_Control\Music folder. Then re-sync your music and videos.

Do you mean "..removing installed cydia packages will decrease the amount of space you have on your device"?

Oh, sorry, I confused space and memory. Thanks for the tips!
