Hello guys.

I was just wondering how I should go about getting the latest jailbreak like 5.1.
I'm currently running jailbreak 4.1 on Iphone 3gs.

I'm just worried because a couple of months ago I made the mistake of trying to unjailbreak my iphone by thinking I could put it in DFU mode and restore and update,
It ended up stuck in DFU mode for a week. I tried all the so called fixes and none worked. I had to bring it to a repair store to get fixed. which he jail broke it to an older version of 4.1.

So am I safe to put in to DFU mode during the jailbreak process as long as I don't go near itunes restore and update?
Or is there something else I have to do before the jailbreak process.

Thanks guys.

You should just be able to put it in DFU mode, and restore to iOS 5.0.1 using iTunes (Use a CFW if you need to unlock). If you run into an error doing that, then there's a problem with your computer.

Once you're on iOS 5.0.1, jailbreak using Redsn0w 0.9.10.

Thanks for replying RoboPolo.

When it was bricked or whatever stuck in DFU mode, I tried fixing it on my mates laptop as well and it never worked on his either. the error I was getting was 1604.
But none of the fixes worked. Anyway It was my own fault as the guy I bought the iphone 3gs off told me I can't update it on itunes as it was already jailbroken.
however I thought I was safe to put it into DFU mode and update and restore then jailbreak again myself.

However after getting it fixed and re-jailbroken by the repair store he jailbroke it to 4.1.
I'm grateful for the advice, I'm just a little bit apprehensive as I was under the impression that you can't update with iTunes once your device is jailbroken.
Am I misinformed Polo. If anyone could let me know what is safe and if I'm talking nonsense, let me know.

Thanks again for any advice guys.

Take your phone and connect it to iTunes. Do the update to 5.01 with iTunes. After that is done it will NOT be jailbroken any more. Now just use Redsn0w to re-jailbreak it.

Firmware 5.0.1
Jailbroken with Redsn0w

Do what the Deputy said above except I would "Restore" in iTunes rather than "Update" just to make sure you have no further problems. Then jailbreak using latest redsn0w found on Dev Team's blog.

Make sure to backup your iPhone, import (transfer) your photos, save Contacts, Calendar in Outlook or Windows Contacts using iTunes.
