Try following the second method, listed directly below the one that gives you an error.
That includes the cydia package so it will encounter less problems.

Hi. As of today I haven't been able to open Cydia. Yesterday I upgraded my 3G to 3.0.1, jailbroke, reinstalled all my Cydia apps, iTunes apps, everything. And it all was working fine untill this morning when I opened Cydia and it just crashed. I can't figure out if anything changed, I know I didn't change anything but what else can it be?
So I started looking for solutions and first deleted all the files inside /var/lib/apt/lists, except the parcials folder, with no luck. Deleted the sources mentioned in the other folder but no luck either. Then I went into console and removed Cydia, then apt-get install cydia..... same error as dieg0_o above my post. Well, let's install essentials then. apt-get install essentials. Guess what? it depends on cydia so it won't be installed. apt-get install cydia esentials. No dice. So I went and found a deb package and installed that one (dpkg -i cydia.deb) it gave me some error but it got installed without configuring essentials or something like that. Cydia is now in springboard but it's still the same thing, it won't open past the black screen. All right, install icy and remove cydia, then reinstall. Didn't work either and I get an error: "dpkg returned error #1" when trying to uninstall. But it does disapear from the installed packages list inside icy, well, let's reinstall it then. Same dpkg error #1 message.
Last resort, rejailbreak. And so I did with redsn0w 0.72 but guess what? Cydia still won't open.
What else is there to do and please don't tell me to restore 3.0.1, jailbreak and reinstall everything as it's just not possible as I did all of that twice yesterday ;)

the deb should go into /private/var/mobile/ if you want to just open the console and install the deb from there, but it could actually be in ANY folder you want then open console and browse into that folder (cd install) if you downloaded cydia.deb into "/private/var/mobile/install", for example. Then dpkg -i cydia.deb to actually install the deb. Another handy command inside console is "ls" to list all the files within the directory you are in.

What didn't work? Have you uploaded the deb into p/v/m/ ?

ls
What do you see now?

???????
You should notice that the package you should have downloaded from the first post is named "Cydia.deb" with capital "C". So you should write it as
dpkg -i Cydia.deb
Capital letters DO matter.

The post above is blank just quoting my post. Have you uploaded the Cydia.deb into /p/v/m trough ssh?
What does the command "ls" returns in screen?
Did you enter "dpkg -i cydia.deb" or "dpkg -i Cydia.deb"

That is the exact same error I get and that seems to be because "essential" is not installed. Try installing icy and cydia from there.
