This video is posted in Mahmood's post regarding how to download Snow Leopard
however...
It's also posted here as it's own thread as this video can be useful on it's own, in it's own right.

The video if annotated, so just follow along. Know that this video is based on my tendency
to dual boot an OS until I'm certain that I like it. If you know for certain that you want to
simply upgrade your existing user account, don't worry about making the second partition
and just make the lil 10GB one. You'll be set.

apparently OSXdaily.com is linking to this?? ... where it has been hit +350 times? sweet! go-go cross promotion! cheers Xsellize family

My "Disk Utility" has been "Modifying partition map" for 4 hours! And I have eaten all my pickles. I am going to kill it very soon unless someone tells me this is normal! The drive is a 300Gig 7200rpm in a macbook, so not lighting fast, but MAN this is nuts. I think DiskUtility is dead.

oh nohz- your junk is whack! (sorry to say)

"you leave now, come back later. try again."

you're right. somethings not right there.
And how did it do once you finally quit and restarted?

Actually I have been quietly waiting ... just killed it now, seems like nothing was done ... started over, (just decreasing primary partition by 10gigs) ...

Well THAT'S more like it, only took about 1 minute. Strange though, when I went to Restore it was not listing any of the partitions, had to quit Disk Utility again and on restarting it was populated ...

5 minutes for the restore .... hopefully that will be the last of the surprises ....

Worked Great: Great tutorial

um...and you have some new method for doing this or something? (wth you on about?)
and no.. its not HD. You can generally tell by the lil thing that says, "HD."

I must be on the rag or something; I'm finding peoples' comments relatively annoying these last few days.

Actually, I think you can just mount it and then set it up as the boot disk if you are already on a mac...
yeah l0ls it isn't hd... but the hd on youtube is typically terrible.

Spliff, I used this method and CCC'd a bootable partition of SL to an external HDD. Is this for all intends and purposes the same as having the DVD when holding down alt key on boot up?

I want to upgrade my internal HDD so need the instal disks unless bootable ext HDD is sufficient?

um, these are more or less two separate topics.

One: make sure your CCC'ed image is bootable. (firewire, blah blah) just be sure to test it and make sure that indeed, it is bootable. (some times they fail. best to check, always) SO, once that is said and doen, yes, you can move your CCC image back onto the upgraded/new hardware and boot from it as usual once done.

Two: Yes, what this process does, is create a bootable image of the Install DVD. So, you can choose it as your bootup disk after doing an option boot...

Cheers, Badgerman- very good questions.

great tut and all
but..
looks like I cant partition my internal hdd as I want to..
Its 150gb capacity and have like 30 gb left of space
are there any other methods except from burning, like mounting on an external hd?
I have an external hdd with usb 2.0..

• if your external is bootable, then yes. Just make the partitions and follow this process, using your external as the destination for the restore
• If not bootable, then no. But if you don't know, might as well give it a shot. (suggestion: use a firewire drive... and if you don't have one yet DO have the ports, its really beyond time to treat yourself to a one there, boss)

• another suggestion: take this opportunity as a sign you could make some more space on your rig? People generally find the space when they need to... tell yourself you need to? lol- it's really only 10 GB. Make the partition, update, then trash that same partition and you are back to the way everything was prior to messing about with this. ;) (of course, keeping the dmg on file for a future restore and what-not)

-Cheers

im a noob, but ive literally googled the heck out of this subject. im just lost, completely lost. ive done every trick i could find. i am getting the error that i dont have enough space when i try to partition, ive cleared out all the single big files. i ended up getting rid of so much unwanted stuff that i have 85 gb of free space. no matter what i do, i still get the error. will someone please tell me there is a way to fix this. its killing me...slowly but surely
