Hello guys, I just registered specifically to ask a question about unlocking the 3G iPhone, I'm thinking about importing a locked one from the USA ( via a friend there), i've heard that the 3.1.3 is yet to be jailbroken, from reading various posts here and at some other forums, I've gotten the idea that the 3GS is now 3.1.3 and 5.12BB OTB, but I'm not getting the 3GS, I'm planning on getting the 8GB 3G this week, my question is, is it any different from the 3GS regarding its current OTB version and jailbreaking/unlocking procedures ? or is it just the same and I'll have to wait for the 3.1.3 to be hacked? thank you in advance.

it depends on your baseband (model firmware) if your device has the 04.26.08 or 05.08.01 you are good to go to unlock it with ultrasn0w or blacksn0w

well the thing is I'm getting it brand new, this week in fact, so does this mean that inevitably I'll be getting one with the latest Baseband version out of the box, or just with the latest firmware version (3.1.3), or both? (in other words are the software version and the baseband version linked? and are all the ones in stores now come with the latest versions in both for a 8gb 3G?) thank you mate for replying.

if you get it new out of the box you have to pray because mostly both are upgraded though baseband and the firmware but in your case the baseband is more important because of the unlock

One more thing, if I did import it and wanted to use it as an iPod until it gets hacked, will I be able to do this? do I have to jailbreak it to use it without activation/sim card?

You can jailbreak 3.1.3 with redsnow0.9.2
As for unlock:
if you are on 5.11.07 you can use blacksnow
if it is 5.12 you wont be able to unlock

you can use it as is w/out simcard

okay I get it now, thank you so much mate, most probably it's going to be 5.12, but at least I'm going to use it as an iPod while waiting for a hack.
