Hey,
I just bought a 3gs to replace my 3g that i sadly ran over with an office chair (please don't ask).
It has the 3.1.3 software on it. I know i can't jailbreak, unlock, or do anything to it. That's not what this post's about.
I've been reading up on the SHSH and ECID numbers and how they work in the jailbreak process. i was wondering what these numbers do exactly. Are they just a call and response that unlocks the backup process? If so, does the use of the SHSH number stop there? Or does it get written to the phone during the backup? If it doesn't, has anyone tried patching itunes instead of the iphone to just bypass the whole process?
Any info, or links to resources on known SHSH information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe

It is a unique identifier for ur phone. Apple uses this number to identify ur phone for update purposes. When you go to restore/update Apple checks this number to determine what fw you have. It's basically a control measure for them against jbers.
