Same thing here, upgraded my 3GS from 3.1.2 (baseband 04.26.08, old bootroom, mc model) with the activated baseband preserved CFW from knitoe, and it works great, it was a very smooth upgrade!
Tried 3G, EDGE, Wifi, GPS, Unlock works with T-Mobile in Europe (bought from AT&T in USA), no crashing and no reception issues no matter how I hold the phone. I've been testing it for about three hours now, all around the city. The new wallpaper, multitasking and folder options are great! As I said, I used the CFW from knitoe + iTunes 9.2, did a restart of my PC and iPhone before shift restoring (also made sure that all Apple processes and services are running in the background), and my MC model iPhone had the old bootrom. Also the iPhone was left in normal mode, meaning I did not change to DFU or recovery mode.
After the restore was finished, I added all the needed sources in Cydia, did another restart, and then installed Ultrasn0w 0.93. Then did another restart after which I synced my iPhone with iTunes (I did not set it as a new device), and got all my data (music, pictures, apps) back. As a final measure, I reset all the settings to the factory defaults, as a lot of users reported that that helps with the 3G data transmissions and other stuff.
Now I'm gonna wait about 1 or 2 weeks so that Cydia developers update their apps, so I can install SBSettings and a few others. This means that I won't be installing anything besides ultrasn0w from Cydia, but I did install all the AppStore applications which I had on my 3.1.2 firmware, and they work great.
P.S. I was also extremely precautions. I even renamed the custom ipsw to "iPhone2_1_4.0_8A293.ipsw", as the old one was named "iPhone2_1_4.0_8A293_Activated_831MB_Root_Stock_Logos_PT4.0.1_Custom_Restore.ipsw", and I know Apple can be rather creative when it comes to protection measures (imagine iTunes detecting the filename, and then sabotaging your installation with 160x type errors!), so I did not want to risk anything. Nice, eh?
Thanks knitoe and all the others!!

After hours of fiddling with various cfw (downloads fr here or made with Sn0wbreeze 1.6.1 myself) and/or the super tedious chain processes of "try jb but fail - repwn with Redsnow 0.9.2 to get out of recovery mode loop" and "jb - restore back to 3.0 - jb again with Redsnow 0.9.2 - then restore cfw of various different sources plus those so-called tips/gimmicks, nothing works.
Personally, recovery mode doesn't work, DFU mode doesn't work. All the various tips about renaming cfw to the official fw filename doesn't work, restoring from iphone software updates folder and etc, don't work (as expected).
The more sensible solutions from Apple Knowledgebase site about reinstalling Apple USB drivers or using different USB ports (both 2.0 USB ports and both 1.0 USB ports) also doesn't do the trick.
So after the excitement about fw4.0 subsides, I am still on jb 3.0 with (Redsnow 0.9.2) with bb 04.26.08, urrgghhhh.. This darn error 1604 (and rare occasional 1602 without any other error)!! I am beginning to get all paranoid and suspect if it might be a bloody Vista thing (probably not). Most likely it is a jb thing, a faulty hardware thing, a bug (of iTunes or iphone) or.. something.. Sigh..
Anyone who tried restoring a cfw 4.0 of any sort or from any sources on a 3G with jb3.0 (bb 04.26.08) can look at the log, it should looks alot like this (it varies slightly here and there from try to try, however):

i recently bought a 3gs (old bootrom) running on ios 4.0 unactivated. To my understanding, i can't use spirit because my phone is unactivated and i tried using redsn0w 0.9.5.b5 but it wouldn't recognize the 4.0 firmware. Is there something that i am missing? Or will i have to wait until a Jb/unlock is release? thanks in advance for your help!
