Yes, finally there is a device that will kill the iPhone if it enters the market. It's name is Yosion’s Apple Peel 520.

Sure , VoIP on iTouch is hardly news today , but if you could slide your very own SIM card and use the iTouch as a regular iPhone, that would be just beautiful right? Introducing Yosion’s Apple Peel 520.

Effectively it is a case which contains a SIM card and an Infineon baseband chip so you can use iPod touch for calls and SMS messaging. You also get a built-in battery in this device, which might cost $44-$74, if it ever emerges at all.

Oh sure, VoIP on the iPod touch is hardly breaking news these days, but what if you could actually slap on a regular SIM card and make calls on said device? That's what Yosion's appropriately named Apple Peel 520 claims to do. Powered by an Infineon baseband chip, this adapter not only offers voice calling and text messaging (presumably requiring a jailbroken iPod touch for the apps; GPRS not possible yet), but it also doubles up as an 800mAh battery and provides 4.5 hours of call time or 120 hours of standby juice. We're told this cheeky hack's coming out in China as early as this week for somewhere between ¥300 ($44) and ¥500 ($74), although the lack of an official website, full spec sheet or compatibility list means we'll have to remain skeptical with this potentially vaporware company. Maybe the demo video after the break will keep us believing.

Would you rather pay 500 to 1000+ Dollars for an iPhone or just 300 dollars for the iPod Touch and the Yosion’s Apple Peel?
Ofcourse you will miss the Camera and GPS but with the iPod Touch 4 coming in september you will probably get a camera with that and Yosion will probably make a hole in the case for that device.

If you can live without GPS and a camera (And some other things that I can't come up with) then this is would be a nice choice.

What are your thoughts about this?

Not an iPhone killer since you still pay for service.

If the Ipod touch had a microphone it would help, but having to use earphones all the time. That alone makes the 800$ iphone a better deal.
Also, does this only give you cellular + sms, or does it actually give your 3G data connection....
Please don't sell anything on these forums, that includes anything on the forum (sig, avatar, any other possible place on this forum)

I read on engadget that this does have a built in mic. It also has a battery in it and protects the iPod.

@vbViper The adapter's got a built-in mic.

@vbViper presumably there's a microphone in the case. Or you could use the earbud/mic combo.

I assume it also has a speaker built in since the iPod Touch's speaker is in the entire body of the iPod and that would be bad for your privacy.

[EDIT]
In the post it said: GPRS not possible yet.
even if GPRS was possible, it still wouldn't be 3g. I searched for it on wikipedia and this is what I found:
2.5G
GPRS
HSCSD
WiDEN

2.75G
CDMA2000 1xRTT/IS-2000
EDGE

3G
W-CDMA
UMTS
FOMA
CDMA2000 1xEV/IS-2000
TD-SCDMA
GAN/UMA

GPRS is 2.5g and that isn't even supported so I'm sure there is no 3g support .

You could pay as little as 10 dollars a month for your service if you bought a new sim. You could probably use verizon with this.

Cheaper + better service = another nail in the iPhone's coffin.

I'm not an iPhone hater, I love iPhones more than I love women. It's just that you could get the same stuff for a lot less.

I use the web alot, and having an iPod Touch with this slapped on the back of it wont cut it for me. It's a nice add-on, but not even close to the iPhone.

So if it didn't have a battery in it and was extra slim but had the same functions, would you use it then?

THIS IS INSANE!!!
After writing this post I went to engadget and I found this:

What is it about the word peel that screams "throw on the back of an iPod touch and grant it the power of mobile internet?" We spotted Yosion's Apple Peel 520 just this morning bound for Chinese markets, and now the FCC has unveiled ZTE's own Peel 3G router. Although the user manual and external photos don't explicitly state it, one look at the (slightly enhanced) image above removes all doubt that this is made to fit snugly around a certain finger-friendly iDevice with a headset jack on the bottom right. Additionally, the user manual's setup screens are all sketched out in what appears to be a more mobile Safari-friendly size. The Qualcomm-powered CDMA2000 case is brandishing Sprint logos on the front and back, which frankly wouldn't be the first (or even second) time the carrier's targeted the Apple faithful. Only this time, there's no WiMAX -- bummer. Crafty, wacky, zany? We're sure Mr. Hesse is chortling, but perhaps he can catch a breath or two and disseminate out some proper release details post-haste.

Ask and you shall receive, it seems.
"In addition, you can search using GPS technology and provide temporary shared internet access to a maximum of five Wi-fi-enabled devices."

This is exactly what some of you were asking for. What do you think about it now?

Now this is much better than the chinese one. If I had an iPod, I would definitely use that, but at the moment, I shall remain faithful to my 3GS.

Wait, so would I have to get a data and smartphone plan on my SIM, or could I take my SIM with my regular phone plan from my RAZR and use it like that?
Don't forget to hit thanks if I helped out~

I think the Sprint version would require a separate plan. The chinese version (first post) allows you to use any GSM SIM with it at the expense of not having any data connection. The Sprint version gives you all the goodies of the iPhone minus the camera.

Sounds like the Sprint version is data-only.

Even if it had voice, I dont see an earpiece or mic built in so youd have to use headphones all the time.

Cool, yes. Will sell a ton? Probably not honestly. I highly doubt youll see this sell for very cheap, probably around $100, so its not any cheaper than getting an iphone 4 on contract. Plus who would want to carry a phone for voice only and this for data only, doesnt make a ton of sense for most people.

I see this as a desperate move by Sprint who cant answer to the iphone.

IMHO the only device that will kill the iphone is the "next iphone" and not such a backpack thing.:whistling:
