Apple added a bunch of new SMS tones to 4.2.1 but apparently they only made them available to iPhone4 users. I didn't see them posted yet so here they are in case anyone wants them for older devices.

Did you dump them yourself from an iPhone 4? Could you post your /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N90AP.plist file?

It could be the key to natively enabling these sounds...

You can add the actual titles/labels if you rename as sms-recieved#.caf (# being 1 thru 6) located in stash>applications>prefernces.app>Englishl.proj>Sound.strings for the tones provided above

The edits are applied to "ALTERNATE_1" all the way to ALTERNATE_5. The 6th txt tone is located in the same file and is labeled "DEFAULT" if you chose to change the names shown when selecting a txt tone in the preferences.app(as in changing 'tri-tone' to 'anything you want it to say' or 'Chime' to 'Quif')

I feel it should be possible to add "ALTERNATIVE_7" and beyond for the new tones as I currently have all the txt tones applied from an alternate iphone without the need for the N90 folder(but there are a lot of secrets/goodies in that file), however I applied these changes months ago on a 4.1sn0.ipsw

I hope this helps, as the above works flawlessly for the standard 6 sms tones

p.s. the txt tones are located in System/Library/Audio/UISounds for anyone who wants to apply these tones

Trust me, the way to enable the tones on a 3G(S) is to put the tones with their original names into UISounds, and to do something else to tell the iPhone to load them...

Renaming and replacing the original tones as you said works, but then you don't really get more choices.
Alternate7, alternate8.... do not work even if you manage to select them.

i got it working on my iphone 3gs....now i have new text tones....if anyone want any tutorial or something, ask me...it very easy to activate it.

tone fx works great you can use any sound you want ,i wish there was a way to assign sms tones for each contact just like ringtones 2

ok here is what i did...

i'll add some instructions:

Goto /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/

Find N88AP.plist file and replace it.

and then goto /System/Library/Audio/UISounds

insert all the text tone files into the UISounds folder. no need to rename anything.

thats it restart/respring your iPhone 3GS.

works on iOS 4.2.1

tested on 3GS only.
